Meeting Notes

Guests tonight:  District Governor Jim Crane, his partner Nancy Loughlin, and Fairport Rotarian Dr. Mike Lischack

Prez Brandon enjoyed last week's speakers:   1) Marathons for Charity - Holly Evans who will do 2 marathons in 8 days on 2 different continents; and 2) Rochester Southwest Breakfast project.

Sunday's Polar Plunge was a huge success with over 1,100 plunging.  Our club had a great showing and raised $3800 for Special Olympics.  Thanks to all who plunged and cheerleaded and contibuted!  Hope they are all warmed up by now!

Due to expected very cold temperatures and wind, the Irondequoit Winterfest has been cancelled.

Lily Schwock reports that  St. Valentine's Day Party at the Legacy at Cranberry Landing is all set for Feb 11th.  Be there 6:15 to help set up.  She has arranged for John Williams, a pianist from Hochstein to perform.  Carnations and greeting cards from children will be given to all residents attending.  Also, St. Patrick's Day at St. Ann's is set for March 11th.  Be there at 6:15.  Rochester Association of Irish Dance will perform and green carnations will be handed out.

Camp Haccamo Car Show is scheduled for Saturday June 6th.

Dr. Mike Lischack from Fairport Rotary wanted us all to know about the Fairport Rotary fundraiser Savor the Flavor on March 1st (beer/win/restaurants) from 1-4pm.   He also welcomes us to join them at one of their upcoming meetings on Monday (first Monday is lunch and remaining are dinner meetings).

Program Notes

District Governor Jim Crane attended our Bocce' night this summer but did not have time to review all the happenings at District level.

Our club was presented with 2 prestigious awards for Rotary Foundation Donations:  the Every Member at $100 and Average Giving over $100 Awards.  Only 6 clubs out of over 64 in District 7120 achieved these awards!  Congrats to our Foundation Chair Ken Van Dieren for his work in making this part of our annual budget.

DG Jim reviewed the District 7120 Calendar Highlights for the rest of the year:

  • February 21: Grant Management Seminar (we already have several members who attended a virtual session
  • March:  President Elect Training - Steve Schwock is signed up to attend.
  • April 11 :  District Learning Assembly in Waterloo - good for new members to learn about Rotary and for “seasoned” members to brush up on opportunities to serve.
  • May 1-3 : District Conference at Holiday Valley on Ellicottville.  Promises good prices and plenty of fun and educational events.
  • June:  Changeover Dinner as DG Jim hands over the gavel to Lisa Norwood from Southwest Rochester Rotary
  • September:  Literacy Seminar to learn about all the ways our club can help to promote literacy.

District Grants applications are due before April 1st.

Youth Services Committee is run by Julie Carney.  She can be contacted to be a speaker about “New Generations”.  Youth Exchange had 16 applications this year but only 5 completed the paperwork to go to a foreign country as Outbound Students.  Our District will have 14 Inbound students.  Interact program is also showing signs of weakening as many clubs have lost their Rotary accreditation due to not following up with the required paperwork.  Also Rochester Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Program have only 12 applicants so they are looking for more applicants.  It is a 5 day intensive leadership experience for high school sophomores and juniors.  There are 6 Rotaract clubs in the Disrict.

New committees Health and Wellness and District Environmental and looking for volunteers if you are interested in these issues.

District membership is at 1993 members - about the same as in June.  We lost Canisteo and Rochester AM clubs this past year but are working on adding a new club soon.

Contributions/Fines

Many contributions for our the District Governor, for DR. Mike from Fairport, for Polar Plunge, for Southwest Rotary Table Program, Foundation/Polio, and for Tony Mormino who left the meeting early after hearing his sister was in Emergency at RGH.

Dave Shaheen for scheduling May 13th or 20th at Glendoveers for Reverse Drawdown Dinner and for 24th club anniversary.

Lily Schwock for Valentines Day and St. Pat's parties.

Tom Kosanke for Lily's Facebook video  of her swinging on a rope and diving in the water in Puerto Rico.
