Meeting Notes
We started out the meeting remembering Todd Quist.  Following is a letter that B.J. Cunningham sent out to out membership earlier this week:

In August of 2011 Irondequoit Rotary constructed a barrier free playground at Camp Eastman.  It was a joint effort between our club and Mommies for Miracles.  The Quist family, Dave and Sally and their son Todd, who was nine at the time, was one of the families that inspired the project.  Todd passed yesterday afternoon.  He was born with Pallister-Killian Syndrome, a genetic condition that occurs at conception.  It’s a multi system disorder that is characterized by extremely weak muscle tone in infancy and early childhood, distinctive facial features, cognitive disabilities, and other birth defects.  The malformation is that chromosome 12 has 4 short arms as opposed to the typical 2.  Todd was 1 in 15.4 million affected by PKS and one of less than 500 reported cases in the world.  Todd was extraordinary in that he was funny, social, and a bit naughty, according to his mom, Sally.

When I looked up some of the photos about the playground construction, I noticed that eight years ago today, on October 1, 2011 we dedicated the playground.  Todd’s older brother, Bob, cut the ribbon that was on the Todd Quist bench that day.  The wake will be at Harris Funeral Home on Friday from 3 to 7pm.  The funeral mass will be at Christ the King Church on Saturday at 9:30am.  Please keep the Quist family in your prayers.
-B.J.

President Bob is looking for ideas to create the Pat Torre memorial.  Please see Bob if you have ideas on a project that would best honor Pat's memory.

Irondequoit Fall Fest held last weekend was well attended.   Thanks goes to Lynn Wozniak and Ray Holla for volunteering at the event and managing what sounded like a horrible bounce house experience!

Pasta Dinner planning and activity is heavily underway.  Please follow the ticket process and Foundation Guidelines that President Bob sent out via email.
Program Notes
Lynn Wozniak attended the District Literacy Seminar.  Lots of great ideas on how clubs can participate in literacy projects.  Important to make sure that each age group is covered in literacy projects because there are different needs per age group including adults.  One good way to improve literacy is leaving the closed caption on their viewing device so they can see the words as they are spoken.

Ideas included:  (1) Baby Bag with books given at hospital to newborn parents so they read to children at the earliest ages - some clubs shoot for "1000 books before kindergarten".  (2) Migrant children summer reading programs, (3) Providing dictionaries, thesaurus, atlas, Constitution, magazines and weekly readers, (4) Volunteering to read at libraries and schools (5) Sponsor Spelling Bees or teams to attend Spelling Bees (6) Little Library and keeping them full (7) Reading Buddies connected with schools/libraries (8) Providing board games, card games, puzzles, etc. to schools (9) Supporting teachers to cover expenses for gift prizes and other supplies not supplied by the school (10) Participate in the Books for the World program (sending books to needy countries.

Lots of discussion followed on our club's plan for Literacy programs.  Over the next few months we will focus on determining our path forward.
