Meeting Notes

Dan Dwyer filling in for President Greg Blair who is still suffering from a back issue.  Guests tonight are Lindsay Kremers and Hannah Weltzer, our speakers tonight from the Lung Association.  Lily Lynch also brought two exchange students Andrea and Gracia from Peru & Bolivia.

Pasta Dinner Update:  Bob Scheidt asks people to keep selling sponsorships as tickets sales are behind last year at this time.  Goal is for 1800 dinners.  All permits are in place.  We need people recertified for food prep for next year (we are ok this year but need to do it before next year).  Bob Schiedt will manage Kitchen, Dan Dwyer manages Food Line, and Tom Kosanke manages Outside.  We still need more volunteers for Sunday - See Bob if you can add helping hands.

Ray Holla is taking over lead in the Dictionary Program for B.J. Cunningham who did a fantastic job on this over many years.   The club is very grateful to B.J. and Kenn Van Dieren for their leadership in this highly successful program!  Ray says that the dictionary order has been placed and he will have more info soon on labels and bookmarks.  Thanks, Ray, for taking over the Dictionary Program!

Program Notes
Lindsay Kremers and Hannah Weltzer from American Lung Association are our speakers tonight.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable diseases and death in the US.  Cigarette use alone causes 480,000 US deaths each year and 28,000 in NY.  Tobacco has greater impact on African Americans, Native Americans and LGBTQ+.  E-Cigarette use is skyrocketing and the average age of new smokers is 13 years old.

The Smoking and Health Action Coalition of Livingston & Monroe (SHAC) focuses on preventing the use of tobacco by youth and young adults.  It tries to reduce second hand and third hand (clothes, rooms, etc) smoke exposure and decrease social acceptability of smoking.   They do this with 4 programs:  1) Tobacco Free Outdoors - work with municipalities and employers to clean up and make their outdoor areas smoke-free  2) Smoke-free Multi-unit Housing - work with landlords to promote smoke-free policies  3) Point of Sale  - work with retailers/government to limit point-of-sale marketing, e.g., Irondequoit has regulations that retailers must follow  4) Smoke free Media - limit smoking in TV, movies...   Coming in 2025 - they will have a program to have cigarette and Vape pick-up (volunteer opportunity).   Vape disposals are a problem that Monroe County is addressing at Ecopark with a disposable program.   "Reality Check" is a Youth led movement against tobacco companies and their manipulative marketing practices that is supported by their organization.
