Meeting Notes
Delighted to have Rotary District 7120 District Governor Dave Hannan and his wife Pam visit our club tonight.

Welcome to our guests Gloria Weaver and her granddaughter.  Lots of fond memories of Dick Weaver as a very generous Irondequoit Rotarian.  Norb Rappl shared stories and remembrances of Dick running a Christmas Day Breakfast for 5 years at his McDonald's restaurant.

Lots of activity lately to help the local Irondequoit Community:  (1) 3rd Grade Dictionary Program is in high gear thanks to BJ Cunningham, Kenn Van Dieren and Bob Spatola.  School 46 in the city and 6 West Irondequoit 3rd grade schools (14 classes) received their dictionaries in the past week.  Program wraps up in early November.  (2) Our club sponsored a Narcan Training event last week thanks to Terri Bastuk at St. Paul Fire Department and had a great turnout.

Kudos to Bob Spatola for securing space at Bishop Kearney to store our Pasta Dinner materials as well as purchase and install all the equipment to make the space safe for storage.  This saves expenses so goes directly to the bottom line on Pasta Dinner profit.  Speaking of the Pasta Dinner, sales are going well.  Keep up the momentum!  See Dave Shaheen if you need more tickets or to return tickets you cannot sell so that we have tickets for the door on Nov. 3rd.

ROC City Rotary members Kelsey Christiansen and Carissa Cantie joined us tonight.  They told us a little about their club and asked for support for their upcoming fundraiser which is a Masquerade Ball & Art Auction next Friday.

Congratulations to Kenn Van Dieren (PH+5) and Lynn Wozniak (PH+1) for being pinned as continuing Paul Harris fellows by District 7120 Governor Dave Hannan!!

Rotary World Polio Day is this week so all "fines" collected tonight will go to Rotary Polio eradication efforts.

Program Notes
District 7120 Governor Dave Hannan addressed our club.  "Rotary Connects the World" is this year's Rotary theme.  The graphic is displayed on the top of this bulletin and it mystified Dave until he saw a video showing how it all fit together.  There are 35,000 clubs around the world and 1.2 million members.  Membership has remained flat worldwide as there is growth in 3rd world nations but decreases in developed countries like the US.  Millennials are "not joiners" but are committed to improving the world so Rotary needs to find more attractive ways for them to participate.  ROC City Rotary is a great example of changing traditional Rotary clubs to suit younger professionals.  Rotary "Vision" statement is "Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves."    The goals to achieve this focus on supporting and strengthening clubs, focus on humanitarian service and enhance public image and awareness.  Rotary Foundation is a 4-star charity as 92% of donations go directly to projects (only 8% of administrative overhead).  There are 69 clubs in District 7120.  3 clubs are folding so it's important to keep up our social media and public relations and membership.  Only half of the clubs submit requests for District grants which could be up to $4000.  Requirements to get a District Grant are $25/member to Foundation and 2 members attend training.  Global Grants are over $30,000 but require more than one club and a focus on 3rd world nations in one of the 6 areas of Rotary focus:
  • Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
  • Disease prevention and treatment
  • Water and sanitation
  • Maternal and child health
  • Basic education and literacy
  • Economic and community development

Polio Plus program started in 1986 and was expected to be a "5 year plan".  There were 350,000 cases of polio that year.  Last year there were 80 cases in Afganistan and Pakistan.  Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matches each dollar raised by Rotary with $2.  Hopefully eradication is just around the corner!

Contributions/Fines
Great to see Gloria Weaver and hear stories about past Rotarian Dick Weaver.  Also, wonderful news that past Rotarian Russ Gugino was honored with room dedication at the Eastman School of Dentristry.  Everyone proud to see Dom & Marilyn Fantauzzo receive town Proclamation for their 35 years of service for the Pasta Dinner last week.  Congrats to Kenn Van Dieren and Lynn Wozniak for earning new Paul Harris pins.  Lou and Fran DiPrima enjoyed baby sitting Angelina while Louis & Christy attended a Bills game.  See Kim Miranda if you can donate gently used Hoodies and/or new Hair Products.
