Meeting Notes

Ukranian Support:  Terri Corrigan-Bastuk and Dave Shaheen represented Irondequoit Rotary at last Saturday's meeting at the Ukranian Federal Credit Union where they met the families our club helped resettle.  Funds from the District Simplified Grant and our general fund were used to provide basic necessities such as food, clothing, and school supplies.  Terri led the project to secure the matching grant from the District.  The families were very thankful and Dave and Terri made channel 13 news.  Click HERE to see the video.

Polar Plunge for Special Olympics:  Shout-out to Dave Long, who decided nearly full submersion was the way to go! Lily, Greg and Pres Dan chose the “walk-on-the wildly cold side” approach. Huge thanks to all who supported - they raised over $1500, with the matching help of $300 from the club. The other $700 in matching funds from our club went to the Award-Winning West Irondequoit HS team that raised a whopping $11,500 for Special Olympics. So proud we were able to help them be the TOP Scholastic Team.  Attendees all had a great experience at the event despite the cold and would like to expand our club participation next year.

Combo Meeting with ROC City Rotary:  Our March 27th weekly meeting we will be at Radio Social for a joint meeting with ROC City Rotary.

Rochester Eclipse April 8, 2024:  President Dan has secured a suite at Rochester Red Wing Innovative Field to join in the events scheduled to celebrate and witness the total eclipse.  We will decide at a future meeting if we will rent the suite as a club event.

President Dan received a very appreciative thank you note from Jennifer Johnson who spoke at a recent meeting.  He also received a thank you note from Bob Spatola who very much appreciated the care package delivered by Terri Corrigan-Bastuk and reports he is getting better every day.

Program Notes

Courtney McGinness, VP of Marketing & Community Engagement,  and Michelle Scipioni, VP of Independent Living presented information about Ellen's Place which is a new senior apartment complex opening in the Fall of 2024.  Located on the current St. Cecilia Church Campus, Ellen's Place is part of the Episcopal SeniorLife Communities.  There are 9 other similar communities in Monroe and Livingston counties.  This community will consist of 74 moderately "market" priced apartments, and on-site cafe, fitness center,  and community Center with health and wellness programming.  Their target market is "middle income seniors 55+".  There are three apartment types: one bedroom, one bedroom with den, and two bedroom apartments ranging in rent price of $1400-$2200 per month and 523 - 750 sq. ft. of living space.  The community will provide social activities including neighborhood outreach to non-residents and sponsor health events such as bringing in doctors on a continuing basis.  Security is a major emphasis so the community will include secured entry.  So far there are 24 applicants and 120 leads.

Ellen’s Place is named in memory of former board chairman J Michael Smith's sister, Ellen McNellis. Ellen was raised in Irondequoit but spent much of her adult life out of the area. When Ellen’s life circumstances and health needs became challenging, she longed to return home and to be near family – especially her devoted, loving brother who immediately coordinated Ellen’s return to Rochester.  Ellen was a women of great perseverance and charisma.  The new community was named in her memory and recognition of her welcoming spirit and loving family.

Nicole McCree and Bridget Jones-Waters are members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority.  Tonight they presented information about Swim 1922 which is a program focused on teaching swimming to African American and Hispanic  children who normally do not have the opportunity to learn to swim.  They are now in partnership with USA Swimming and this is a national program.  The local chapter offers swim clinics with the intent to generate interest in learning to swim.  The next clinic is scheduled for May 11th.  Our club supported this great program last year and will do so this year with a donation of $500.
