Program Notes

Chris Henning and Sue Magee from Irondequoit Garden Walks (IGW) started this new non-profit organization in Irondequoit to "connect neighborhoods, connect gardens, and cultivate community".   IGW is a self-guided garden walks event that will have its inaugural event Sunday, July 20th (rain or shine).  Attendance is completely free and open to the public.  Currently, there are 46 gardens registered which includes 42 residential gardens and 4 community spaces (Helmer Nature Center, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Summerville Presbyterian Church, and Vineyard Church).

IGW is patterned after the very successful garden walks in Buffalo which has been ongoing for many years, has hundreds of gardens and is a whole weekend.  IGW wants to start small and build as they learn.  Visitors should go to one of the community spaces or the IGW website to see a map of the gardens all across Irondequoit that will participate.  Host gardens are free to enter and there is no judging involved.  All types of gardens will be represented. IGW provides event insurance for Host garden peace of mind.  Registration deadline is MAY 15, 2025.

Other than hosting a garden, ways to get involved are:

• Volunteer at a Welcome Station
• Be a Garden Finder in your neighborhood
• Join an information table event
• Distribute posters or share on social media
• Join the leadership team

Sponsors and Donors are greatly encouraged to help defray the costs of putting on this event.  It is great visibility for local businesses .  In-kind donations and sponsorships are needed!

The event is a new addition to the Irondequoit community and members of our club were interested in becoming host gardens, volunteers and hoping that the event is a great success.

See IGW powerpoint presentation HERE and their sponsorship pamphet HERE.
