Alison Schmitt, Camp Director at Camp Haccamo was our speaker tonight. Once again, the camp is full this year which shows the need for this service in our community. Several counselors were former campers so you can see that people love being associated with this camping experience and stay committed for a lifetime. New developments at the camp: a new climbing wall and the Zip-line has been rebuilt due to a tree falling on it last year. A camper was on the zip-line when the tree fell but no one was hurt due to the quick action of several counselors. The tree house is a big hit as the children love to play in it and it allows the counselors relief when there are down times at the camp. So far the camping week has been peaceful. When asked how we can help even more with the camp, Alison pointed to several things on her wishlist: (1) a handicapped accessible playground (money is being raised for this already), (2) a large "Amish-like" playhouse for younger campers to have a place for imaginative play, (3) new exhibit in the nature area, (4) need volunteers to be Train conductors, (5) more sensory equipment in the sensory center, (6) snacks and energy drinks for counselors are always a big hit because of the long hours they put in each week. Our club will discuss these needs and get back to Alison and Dolly Kujawa on how we might help. |
